****UPDATE: I-40 westbound lanes have reopened.****

Westbound lanes of I-40 are closed on Saturday afternoon due to a wreck.

Officials have been encouraging residents to stay off of the roads, if at all possible, due to hazardous conditions from a winter storm that dumped varying amounts of snow across central North Carolina Friday night into Saturday.

Pictures from North Carolina Department of Transportation cameras show a tractor-trailer that appears to be the cause of the I-40 closure. DOT officials say a detour has been established around the accident at Mile Marker 259 near Hillsborough.

There is no word on any injuries associated with the accident or timeline of when the road will reopen.

Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads over the weekend as temperatures are expected to reach near-record lows.

The inclement weather knocked power out to a small portion of Chapel Hill and has forced several closings.
