A popular downtown street in Chapel Hill will close for around two weeks due to a pair of projects, according to the town government.
An update shared Thursday said East Rosemary Street between Columbia Street and Henderson Street will close to through traffic starting on Saturday. The projects are the Orange Water and Sewer Authority repairing a water main, while the Town of Chapel Hill installs a new crosswalk in front of the 125 East Rosemary Street parking deck to improve pedestrian safety.
In its update, Chapel Hill said all town-issued parking along East Rosemary will still be accessible to drivers. The newer, seven-story deck can be accessed from its entrance/exit on North Street via Columbia Street. The Wallace Deck at 150 East Rosemary Street and the surface parking lot at 100 East Rosemary Street will still be reached by East Rosemary, as the closure will take place further down the road from those entrances.
The town said pedestrians, bicyclists and through traffic can use East Franklin Street to detour the closure, and foot traffic should follow detour signs set up along the sidewalks.
For the water main repairs, OWASA said it is notifying customers who are directly affected by the work, as they should expect to be without water for about 12 hours.
As of Thursday, the town government anticipates the road to reopen to normal traffic on Wednesday, Dec. 18 — but all work is weather-permitting and the timeline is subject to change.
Additional details on the East Rosemary Street closure, and how to sign up for alerts on when the road is reopened, can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill’s website.
