A section of Buckhorn Road in Orange County is closed until August as crews are replacing an aging bridge.

The closure of the roadway stretching between Bradshaw Quarry Road and Orange Grove Road began on Monday, May 7. North Carolina Department of Transportation contractors are working to replace the bridge that spans Cane Creek.

Local traffic is still allowed on either side of the bridge “up to the point of closure.”

The existing bridge was built in 1956, according to the DOT, and “no longer meets the demands of the traffic using it and has reached the end of its life cycle.”

A detour has been established around the closure.

Officials say the work is part of the department’s program working to “improve the condition of the state’s bridges and ensure the safety of drivers who rely on them.”

The work is scheduled to be completed Friday, August 10.
