Motorists throughout August will notice repaving work being completed on Culbreth Road in Chapel Hill.

A release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation on Friday said a resurfacing project on the road is now underway. Contracted crews began to mill and resurface parts of the street, with improvement of pavement markings also to be completed.

Additionally, new bike lanes will be added to Culbreth Road, as requested and paid for by the Town of Chapel Hill. The local government examined the possibility of adding bicycle lanes earlier this summer, using NCDOT’s existing plans to repave the road as an opportunity to create new lanes that will stretch from U.S. 15-501 to Smith Level Road.

While traffic may be impacted from some of the repaving project, Town of Chapel Hill staff say the new bicycle lanes are not projected to create any delays or changes to the traffic flow.

The contractor crews will take place under lane closures on Mondays through Saturdays, according to the state Department of Transportation, with work being conducted from 9 a.m. to sunset. The project is scheduled to be complete by Friday, August 13, weather permitting.

The state agency urged Chapel Hill drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be mindful of repaving crews working in the area over the coming days. Those traveling through the work zone should expect some delays in traffic flow.
