UNC leadership sent a campus message Friday morning urging everyone to enjoy Saturday’s Final Four game safely.

Amy Johnson, vice chancellor for student affairs, said all Tar Heel fans planning to go to Franklin Street must follow the Town of Chapel Hill ordinances. This includes prohibiting items like alcohol, weapons, glass bottles, paint, fireworks, animals and furniture.

“With the potential for thousands of people in close quarters on Franklin and Columbia Streets, it is important to be mindful of yourself and your friends and to make safe choices,” Johnson said in the message to campus. “As a reminder, bonfires are not permitted and are in violation of town regulations.”

The campus message also stressed locking residences and cars as there will be an increased number of people in the area Saturday evening.

“For off-campus residents living near downtown, be aware that traffic and parking may be restricted in and around your neighborhood,” the vice chancellor said. “Illegally parked vehicles are subject to being ticketed and towed.”

Additionally, several on-campus parking regulations will be changed for this weekend. Several campus lots like Cobb Deck, Nash Lot, and the Raleigh Street Meters will require a UNC daytime or weeknight permit from 4 p.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Sunday. Swain Lot, Porthole Alley, Morehead Lot and Coates Lot will also be closed to the general public after 4 p.m. on Saturday. UNC’s Parking and Transportation Department said vehicles in these parking lots will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Johnson said several streets connecting campus and downtown will also close beginning as early as 4 p.m. Saturday. These include Franklin Street from Raleigh Street to Mallette Street, Columbia Street from Rosemary Street to Manning Drive and Raleigh Street from East Franklin to Cameron Avenue.

Additionally, Henderson Street from East Rosemary to East Franklin, Boundary Street from County Club to Franklin Street, Park Place to Franklin and Battle Lane from County Club to Franklin will also be closed. Residential Streets near downtown are also likely to be closed off except to residents and their guests.

“This is such an exciting time to be at Carolina!” Johnsons message said. “As we root for our Men’s Basketball team, don’t forget: Tar Heels look out for each other.”
