CHAPEL HILL- Authorities have released the name of the man killed by a car when walking along Bethel-Hickory Grove Church Road on Tuesday night.
Greg Powell was 19 years old at the time of his death. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School this June, where he was a wide receiver and defensive back on the football team.
Head Coach Issac Marsh said that he was told the news of Powell’s passing Wednesday and was left in shock.
“We’re coping. We are taking each day as it comes. Each day is getting better,” Marsh said. “The kids were devastated when they got the news Wednesday that they had lost a [former] teammate and a friend. We just taking it day by day here at the school.”
Marsh recounted coaching Powell for fours years: “He was very dependable. He started his junior year in a couple of games. He started his senior year.”
The State Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident, but the woman who was driving the car that hit Powell is not likely to be charged.
