The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating following a pedestrian being struck in a Food Lion grocery store parking lot.

A release from the office on Saturday afternoon said deputies responded to a call about a motor vehicle crash in the morning involving a pedestrian. When emergency personnel arrived at 101 North Scottswood Boulevard off N.C. Highway 70, they found Nell Richardson, 98, of Hillsborough.

According to the release, Richardson was struck by a motorist driving their vehicle across the Food Lion parking lot. The 98-year-old was taken to Duke Hospital by Orange County EMS, where she later died from the injuries suffered from the collision.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the incident was not a hit-and-run, but did not initially release information about the motorist. The investigation into the collision is ongoing, with the office saying more information will be released when it becomes available.
