Hillsborough has begun supplying water to the southern portion of the county serviced by Orange Water and Sewer Authority.

OWASA suffered a significant water main break early Monday morning. The utility then asked customers to limit water use to essential purposes and then issued a boil water advisory.

Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools and UNC – Chapel Hill both closed Monday due to the issues with the water supply.

Hillsborough’s water supply system shares a connection with OWASA “that can be opened to allow one utility to share water with the other when needed,” Hillsborough officials said Monday.

Hillsborough and Durham opened connections to share water with OWASA in February 2017 when another issue caused southern Orange County to be without water.

“While the town has enough water that mandatory conservation is not expected,” officials wrote in the Hillsborough release, “customers are encouraged to voluntarily conserve water.”

Hillsborough is not affected by the boil water advisory in place for OWASA customers.

Orange County elections officials said they were prepared to operate all polling locations Tuesday for Election Day regardless of water issues.
