****UPDATE: OWASA officials said in a 3 p.m. update that crews have isolated the water main break. But customers are still encouraged to use water for essential needs only. Orange Water and Sewer Authority is asking all customers to “limit water use to essential purposes” after a water main break early Monday morning. Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools is closing schools across the district on a staggered schedule Monday due to the complications from the water main break.

Carrboro Police said just after 7 a.m. Monday that a break in the water line was causing Jones Ferry Road to be closed between Barnes and Bim streets.

An update from OWASA at 8:15 a.m. said that the water main break was “draining water tanks,” which prompted the message to limit water use to essential purposes.

“Please limit use to drinking and basic hygiene,” OWASA officials said just before 8:30 a.m. “We need to conserve the water in the system as we work to isolate and repair the break.”

OWASA issued a boil water advisory just before 9:45 a.m. Monday while continuing to ask customers to limit water use to essential purposes.

The Chapel Hill – Carrboro YMCA is suspending shower service, according to a post on social media, until the OWASA service is fully restored.

Crews are on-site to isolate the break, according to OWASA. But there is no estimation as to when it will be repaired.
