A fatal crash early Wednesday morning led to a stretch of a busy highway in Orange County being closed.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said a sedan and a tractor trailer had a head-on collision shortly after 7 a.m. on North Carolina Highway 86. A spokesperson for the office confirmed to Chapelboro the impact of the collision led to a fuel spill and subsequent fire, leading the Cedar Grove Fire Department to respond in addition to sheriff’s deputies and troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The driver of the sedan died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office, while the truck driver was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluations.

The part of NC 86 between McCullough Road and Persimmon Hill Drive, which is north of Hillsborough and Cedar Grove, continued to stay closed through the morning. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it reopened to traffic around 11 a.m.
