A Chapel Hill man was killed in a wreck that forced the closure of NC 54 on Friday.
State officials said in a release on Monday that 45-year-old Frederick Lamont Wardlow, of Chapel Hill, was killed when the vehicle he was driving crossed the center line and struck a dump truck that was loaded with dirt. The wreck near Stanford Road caused NC 54 to be closed for several hours during the evening commute in western Orange County.
Wardlow died at the scene, and the passenger in his vehicle was transported to UNC Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver of the dump truck was also transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said that no charges have been made. “At this time, the exact cause for Wardlow to [leave] his travel lane remains under investigation.”
