The Orange County Board of Education is inviting the public to a virtual town hall meeting on June 20 which will address proposed redistricting and reassignment processes for Orange County Schools. The redistricting and reassignment as proposed would take effect beginning with the 2024-25 school year.

“Community input is crucial to the success of redistricting efforts,” read a release from the school system.

The Zoom webinar will begin at 6 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. The town hall will begin with a presentation, followed by a question-and-answer period. Interpretation in Spanish will be available.

Orange County Schools provided a list of several potential discussion topics, including:

  • Why are some schools overcrowded, and some under-enrolled? How does redistricting improve this?
  • When will differing proposals be compared?
  • How and when will redistricting and reassignment take place?

“While every student in Orange County Schools can be served within existing space, there is a vast difference in the level of service among OCS elementary schools,” the school system’s statement said. “Student ratios for spaces like cafeterias, gymnasiums and classrooms vary widely across the district.”

The Orange County Schools website provides timelines for the process, beginning with presentations last fall. In addition, members of the public may submit their own questions and comments in a public input survey here.

Orange County Schools is planning to host additional public meetings throughout the 2023-24 school year.
