The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education is seeking to fill an open seat within the coming weeks.

The school district has released applications for the vacant school board seat created by Dr. Amy Fowler’s addition to the Orange County Board of Commissioners earlier in December. Fowler, who was elected in 2017, leaves with one year remaining on her seat.

Applicants for the seat will have to answer several questions about their experience and perspectives with the CHCCS system. Questions include listing priorities for the district, ideas to promote diversity and understanding of inequities surrounding race.

While the school system has shared no timeline for when the newest board member will be chosen, many pressing issues face Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. In addition to welcoming a new superintendent to begin 2021, the school district is determining when students and teachers will return to classrooms for in-person instruction amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the virus, CHCCS also worked to adjust financial operations following several irregular contracts and improve on the achievement gap between students.

The CHCCS district says applications for the vacant Board of Education seat will close on Friday, January 8. The full application form can be found here.
