The Hillsborough Police Department’s annual Toy Drive will end on Thursday with a celebration.

At the main police station from 6 to 8 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus will be giving gifts out to children ranging from infants to 15 years old. New, unwrapped gifts will still be taken for the drive until noon on Thursday.

Former Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens said in a conversation with WCHL’s Aaron Keck that he takes pride in the police department’s ability to connect to the community.

“One of the things I’m immensely proud about it our police chief and our Hillsborough Police Department,” Stevens said, “which spends so much effort on community policing, on building relationships, and they have really created this culture of being out among the people and getting involved and donating back.”

Stevens said this is the kind of work he has come to expect out of Hillsborough’s Police Department.

“It’s real and they work so hard to make it part of what they do every single day, as well as very competent police work,” he said.

The annual toy drive kicked off in November with help from the Timeless Cruizers car club of Efland. The Benefit Cruize In on November 9 included a food drive to benefit the local pantry run by Orange Congregations in Mission.

The Hillsborough Police station is located on 127 North Churton Street.
