Bobby Gary of Chapel Hill won a prize of $2 million from a $20 lottery ticket, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced Friday.

The lottery shared a release saying Gary bought the ticket from the Harris Teeter on Hillsborough Road in Durham and collected his prize on Thursday.

“I called my wife and told her, ‘I just scratched a $2 million ticket,” Gary said. “I was bawling my eyes out when I called her. I was just so happy.”

Ray chose to receive a lump sum of $1.2 million, which after required state and federal taxes comes to $851,174.

The ticket was from the game ‘Mega 7s,’ which debuted in October. Gary won one of four top prizes in the game, which means the lottery will begin the process of ending it.

Ticket sales from Mega 7s and other games raise more than $2.5 million per day for education, with $8.3 million of that going to Orange County in 2022.
