Talk about a return on your investment. Jose Ortez of Durham won the top prize of a $500,000 from a $10 scratch-off ticket, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced Friday.

The lottery shared a release saying Ortez bought the ticket from Refuel on Guess Road in Durham and collected his prize on Thursday. After required state and federal taxes, Ortez will take home $325,050.

The ticket was from the game ‘Cashword,’ which debuted in March. According to the lottery, two more $500,000 tickets remain to be won.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games raise more than $900 million per year for education, with $13.9 million of that going to Durham County in 2021.
