CARRBORO – North Carolina’s first openly gay police chief plans to call it quits after nearly three decades working in Carrboro.
Since joining the Carrboro Police Department in 1984, Carolyn Hutchison has pretty much done it all: after starting off as a new patrol officer, she then moved to narcotics, became an investigator, then moved on to deal with juvenile crime and administrative services.
Eventually, Hutchison was rewarded with the top job in 1998. She has been Carrboro’s Police Chief ever since, but she’ll officially retire this year, sometime around the beginning of October.
In an email to Town Manager David Andrews, the self-described “slightly scuffed and worn” 53-year-old said, ”I look forward to the challenges and blessings inherent in policing the Carrboro community until the day I retire.”
