If you’re planning to drive in downtown Chapel Hill, watch for closures on East Rosemary Street as crews work on sewer and storm lines underneath the road.

For around the next four weeks, a portion of Rosemary Street will be closed between Columbia and Henderson Streets, near the site of the new parking deck. Signage will direct drivers and pedestrians, and vehicles will still be able to access Lot 2 and the Wallace Parking Deck.

Town Manager Maurice Jones provided this map of the road closure to the Chapel Hill Town Council. Click to enlarge.

The work is part of the ongoing East Rosemary Street redevelopment project. Speaking with 97.9 The Hill, Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger said the project is proceeding well.

“They’re starting to see some walls go up over there, so we’re excited about that,” she said. “It takes a long time to get the site ready for something like this – that’s why you’re seeing a lot of dirt being moved around – and to get the utilities lined up in the right spaces across the road. So those things take time, and they have to be coordinated and sequenced – but we’re excited, (and) it’s moving along just fine.”

In an email to the Chapel Hill Town Council, Town Manager Maurice Jones said the road closure is scheduled to last four weeks, “but it will open sooner if the work is completed ahead of schedule.”

Here’s the full text of Town Manager Jones’ email:

Mayor and Council,

Beginning on Monday, February 20th, a portion of Rosemary Street in front of the deck construction will be closed to through traffic. This closure is necessary to allow the sewer and storm line utility work to happen in an open trench in the road. Access to Lot 2 and the Wallace Deck will remain open and there will be increased signage, including variable message boards, for pedestrians and vehicles. Our initial schedule is to maintain the closure for 4 weeks, but it will open sooner if the work is completed ahead of schedule. A map of the closure is attached.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

All the Best,
Maurice
