Every year, Orange County hosts an event called “Project Connect,” connecting residents at risk of homelessness with local services – employers, housing agencies, doctors, lawyers, even hairstylists – that can help them stay afloat.

It’s always held at the Hargraves Community Center, with several hundred guests and dozens of service providers. Hosted locally by the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness, Project Connect is modeled after a successful program that launched in San Francisco in 2004 and has since spread to communities nationwide.

This year’s Project Connect will take place on Tuesday, March 29, from 9 am to 3 pm – and organizers are putting out the call now for volunteers. It takes dozens of volunteers to make the event possible each year – greeting guests, filling out forms, preparing and serving food, setting up and taking down booths, registering voters, and more.

Jamie Rohe is Orange County’s Homeless Programs Coordinator; she’s stepping down from her position, so this is her last year spearheading Project Connect. She spoke about the event with WCHL’s Aaron Keck.

Volunteer shifts are three hours long, either in the morning (8:30-11:30) or the afternoon (11:30-2:30) on Tuesday the 29th. Organizers are also seeking volunteers to help set up the night before (Monday, March 28, from 6-9 pm) or clean up after the event (Tuesday from 3-5 pm).
