Google has started installing its fiber network infrastructure in Chapel Hill, according to the town.
A release says this work will lay the network’s preliminary infrastructure and include work in a “very limited number of neighborhoods.”
Homeowners will be notified via door-hangers once work begins within neighborhoods to connect homes.
Officials say Google Fiber is partnering with S&N Communications to install the backbone of the system aimed at bringing Google’s gigabit internet service, which has speeds of up to 100 times fast than average broadband today.
Residents can keep up with lane closures due to fiber installation or receive information about other questions or concerns via the town’s website.
AT&T is also installing its fiber network. A crew damaged a water line earlier this month during fiber installation work.
The announcement that Google would be joining AT&T and bringing its fiber network to Chapel Hill was announced in January 2015.
The town has partnered with AT&T and Google to work to bring internet to public housing while installing the fiber network.
