The annual observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 16 will affect numerous local government services in the Orange County area. Here’s what you can expect:

Town of Chapel Hill

There will be no residential trash collection on Monday, January 16. The make-up day is scheduled for the following Wednesday. Curbside recycling will also not be collected on Monday, with collections delayed by one day during the week of January 15-21. Commercial trash will also not be collected on Monday. The Orange County Landfill and recycling centers will be closed to observe the holiday.

The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed. Chapel Hill Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule (no U or NU routes).

Chapel Hill administrative offices, the Community Center Pool, Hargraves Center and Teen Center will all be closed.

Town of Carrboro

Carrboro Town Hall and other administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 16. Yard waste collection will be delayed until Tuesday.

Town of Hillsborough

The Hillsborough town offices will be closed to observe the holiday. The Monday and Tuesday routes for garbage collection will be combined on Tuesday.

Orange County Government

All branches of the Orange County Public Library will be closed on the holiday. The C&D Landfill and other waste and recycling centers will be closed as well. Recycling collection scheduled for Monday will be delayed by a day.
