This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

This week is a busy one for local government. In Chapel Hill, the Town Council will get the results of a public survey that showed residents are generally happy with their community – but a bit less so than they were two years ago. Orange County’s two school boards will both address a continued steady decline in student enrollment. In Chatham County, discussions will continue on a proposed utilities merger with TriRiver. And in Durham County, the city council will hear a rezoning request from Duke University, who’s interested in making developments on 154 acres of property just west of downtown.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Tuesday, October 8, Orange County Commissioners will meet jointly with the Orange County Chiefs Association, starting at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Commissioners will get updates from the county’s fire chiefs on their recent initiatives, hiring and equipment needs, and what can be done to improve fire & rescue service in Orange County. Afterward, county commissioners will hold a work session that includes a discussion of school capital funding, as well as appointments to various county boards and commissions.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 9. Council members will get the results of a community survey, which showed a slight decline in resident satisfaction (and general dissatisfaction about traffic and transportation), though Chapel Hillians on average are still happier with public services than residents of other towns. In addition, council members will discuss the next steps for developing the Greene Tract, and they’ll receive a concept plan for a new church on Old Lystra Road.
