The top-ranked UNC field hockey team stayed undefeated on the 2024 season with wins at ACC newcomers Stanford and Cal during the weekend.

At Stanford on Friday, Carolina outshot the Cardinal 20-5 and took an early lead on a Katie Dixon goal within the game’s first seven minutes. The score stayed 1-0 until the third quarter, when Charly Bruder doubled the advantage off one of UNC’s five penalty corners. The Tar Heels then dominated the final quarter, sending 13 shots toward the Cardinal cage and scoring one more time when Pleun Lammers scored off another corner. UNC goalie Abigail Taylor made three saves in the 3-0 win, Carolina’s fifth consecutive shutout.

In Berkeley on Sunday afternoon, the Cal defense held UNC scoreless through the first quarter, but Bruder found the back of the cage at the 6:01 mark of the second. Bruder struck again midway through the third quarter to make it 2-0, then again with 1:42 remaining in the fourth to complete her hat trick and seal the 3-1 win. Cal’s lone goal in the third quarter was the first given up by Carolina since September 1. UNC outshot Cal 23-13 overall and took 12 penalty corners to just five for the Bears.

The two wins move Carolina to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels are already 4-0 in true road games, having played seven of their eight contests away from Karen Shelton Stadium. That trend will continue on Friday, October 11, as UNC visits No. 16 Louisville at 3 p.m.
