A malware attack on the City of Durham and Durham County left the two governments recovering over the weekend.

A statement from the two local governments said a cyber malware attack occurred late on Friday, March 6, on its operating systems. Notification systems alerted both the city and county of the attack, which prompted quick responses and minimized damage. According to the release, both governments were continuing to work on Monday to return all systems back to normal.

The City of Durham is investigating the source of the attack while bringing systems back online. The city shut its phone system down to contain the attacks, meaning phone disruptions to certain facilities and services are still ongoing. But the government assured residents the critical public safety systems like 911 maintained their operation.

The Durham County phone system is also operating as normal, as well as its website.

The release does not share any information about whether the attackers demanded ransom or targeted specific information from either of the governments.

According to the release, Durham’s City Hall, all non-emergency City operations, programs and services opened normally on Monday. The Durham County government also said its normal schedule was resumed on Monday.
