The Town of Chapel Hill will be temporarily ceasing its weekly yard waste and bulky items collection in mid-April.
The town government shared the news in a release on Thursday, citing the protection of its employees’ and residents’ health and well-being as a driving factor behind the decision. Beginning Saturday, April 18, Solid Waste Services will not be picking up yard waste and bulky items like mattresses, appliances and furniture placed at the curb.
Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger spoke with 97.9 the Hill’s Aaron Keck about the adjustment to the town’s operations, saying it’s being done to help the town employees during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re very grateful to our dedicated employees,” she said. “We’re trying to do the things we know to give them the most protection possible and we’re asking all residents to please respect the fact that people are still working.”
The change will not affect the town’s trash collection, according to the release, but Chapel Hill is asking residents to be more mindful than ever to help minimize any risk of exposure to themselves or the collectors. The best way to do so is ensuring trash is securely tied inside a trash bag and placed inside a trash cart.
Hemminger said residents could even take it a step further, if residents have the sanitizing resources.
The town’s release said Orange County’s Waste & Recycling Centers are still accepting bulky items from residents for no charge. For hours of operation and locations, check the centers’ site or call 919-968-2788. Residents who also specifically need bulky items collected before April 18 can call the town’s Public Works Department at 919-969-5100 or fill out a form.
Some collection services will also be disrupted by the Good Friday holiday on April 10. Yard waste and commercial trash will not be collected. More details on the Spring Holiday Service Schedule can be found here.
