Chapel Hill Transit is hosting a community meeting on Monday evening to discuss plans for multi-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians along Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard.

The corridor extending from Eubanks Road to Southern Village is also being studied for the North-South Bus Rapid Transit route being proposed. The plan would also expand dedicated space for cyclists and pedestrians along more than 80 percent of the route, according to the town.

Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger said safety and reducing the impact on the climate are goals for the town.

“We really want to make those alternate modes of transportation really work for folks,” Hemminger said. “We want them to be in pathways that actually get you from here to there, places people want to go.

“We’re working really really hard on that. And that’s again multi-faceted; we want to reduce our carbon footprint. Getting people walking and on bikes and using public transit are all part of that equation.”

Transit officials will discuss opportunities for multi-use paths and other considerations for the final plans at Monday’s meeting, which is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Public Library.
