The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded UNC Hospitals four stars in its Overall Quality Ratings for 2022, the UNC Health system announced earlier this week.

The 2022 ratings mark an improvement for the Chapel Hill hospital and lynchpins of the statewide health system, which had previously earned three-star ratings since CMS began using the metric in 2015.

“I would like to thank all of the medical staff and teammates of UNC Hospitals for their unwavering dedication to enhancing our patients’ quality of care,” said hospital president Janet Hadar. “Their commitment and many, many hours of quality assurance refinement led to this accomplishment.”

According to a release from UNC Health, the CMS ratings are based on mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience and timely, effective care.

UNC Hospitals was also ranked as the No. 2 hospital within the state of North Carolina in the most recent report from U.S. News & World Report.

“These ratings reflect our physicians’ and teammates’ ongoing commitment to providing high quality and safe care for all of our patients,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “We are proud to receive this recognition, especially in the face of ongoing challenges during the pandemic.”
