Josh Neuman, a former UNC student who described himself as a “filmmaker, adventurer and entrepreneur,” was killed along with three others in a plane crash in Iceland earlier this month. Neuman was 22 years old.
Neuman, who began making videos at the age of 12, had a large following on social media, with more than 1 million subscribers to his YouTube channel and almost 200,000 on his Instagram page. He was known for his skateboarding and longboarding videos, as well as partnering with global brands on sightseeing videos around the world.
Neuman graduated from Marvin Ridge High School in Waxhaw, N.C., and arrived at Carolina in 2018 before deciding to pursue a full-time content creation career.
“His love for pushing boundaries and escaping the comfort zone can be seen in both his adventures and his work,” Neuman’s website said.
Neuman was in Iceland to create commercial content for Suspicious Antwerp, a Belgian fashion company. His plane did not send a distress signal before it disappeared from radar last Thursday. A search-and-rescue led by Icelandic authorities eventually discovered portions of the aircraft in Lake Thingvallavatn, about 25 miles east of Reykjavik, the national capital. Four bodies were later found in the lake, more than 150 feet below the surface. They have not yet been retrieved.
“For the safety of divers we have to wait until the weather improves,” police chief Oddur Arnason told The Associated Press.
Neuman’s family posted an official statement on his Instagram page earlier this week.
“In his 22 years on this earth, Josh didn’t just live life, he was life,” the statement read. “And he lived every day to the fullest extent possible while being kind to everyone.”
It went on, “While we mourn his loss with you, we promise that in honor of his memory, our family stands committed to establishing a charitable foundation that will continue to forever support his dream to make a meaningful difference in this world that we live in, so that his name, and his enduring spirit, will never perish.”
