A prescribed fire is scheduled for Pritchard Park at the Chapel Hill Public Library on Monday evening.

The prescribed fire is scheduled to take place between 5 and 7 p.m. “on the grassy sloped area above the Library’s circular drive” and will be carried out by the North Carolina Forest Service and the Chapel Hill Fire Department.

Town officials said the burn will “help to maintain the health of the Pritchard Park ecosystem by mitigating the invasive species that are rampant on the slope, rejuvenating native grasses, improving wildlife habitat, and controlling insects.”

Chapel Hill town manager Roger Stancil wrote in an email that the fire is expected to “have little to no impact on library operations.”

Stancil wrote that the burn could also potentially provide STEM-related education opportunities.

If there are changes in the wind forecast for Monday evening, the burn will be postponed.
