An overnight fire left several mobile units at North Chatham Elementary School burned to the ground on Sunday.

A release from the Chatham County Schools district alerted the community of the fire, saying no one was injured. The fire destroyed five mobile units on the school grounds, but the elementary school’s leadership is working to “reassure families that the school is safe and the fire will not affect day-to-day learning this week.”

“We are so glad no one was injured,” said Principal Emily Bivins in the district’s release. “We want to put our families’ minds at ease that this will not affect the safety of our school or our learning environment. We appreciate our community’s support as we move forward from this.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the local fire department. The school district said it is working to create an inventory of what materials were lost, since the units were used for elective classes, staff offices and storage.

On Monday, students and parents can expect classes to be conducted normally, according to Chatham County Schools. Some classes may be moved to a different space in the main building, while educators will hold talking circles to share what happened to students and help them process the news. Additionally, the district said North Chatham Elementary will have counselors on campus Monday to assist the staff and students as necessary.
