Two candidates in high-profile Chapel Hill municipal elections received an endorsement from an unexpected source on Monday: UNC men’s basketball star Armando Bacot. Bacot publicly voiced his support for mayoral candidate Jess Anderson and town council candidate Theodore Nollert on his Twitter account.
Anderson is running against Adam Searing in the Chapel Hill mayoral race. Each are vying to replace mayor Pam Hemminger, who is stepping down from the position at the end of the year.
Nollert is one of 10 candidates vying for four seats on the town council. David Adams, Breckany Eckhardt, Jeffrey Hoagland, Melissa McCullough, Jon Mitchell, incumbent Amy Ryan, Elizabeth Sharp, Renuka Soll and Erik Valera are also in the race. Early voting begins this week for all of Orange County’s 2023 municipal elections, as the county’s first of five early voting sites will open on Thursday, October 19. The early voting period will run through November 4, and residents will then have Election Day on Tuesday, November 7 as their final opportunity to cast their votes.

Michael Koh,
How well researched is your article?
Is there an inherent, unfair conflict of interest? Student endorsing faculty? Faculty requesting an endorsement from a student?
Faculty asking for an NIL endorsement from a student athlete?
Or something else? Click on your reported endorsement referenced in the announcement posted via X (twitter) @iget_buckets35
…definitely not a picture of UNC’s Armando Bacot. Posted by Armando or an imposter?
Has this article been fact checked?
Hi there Steve — Brighton McConnell, news director here. I assure you that our coverage has been sufficiently fact-checked.
That is indeed Armando Bacot’s X page. He has used a photo of former teammate Beau Maye as his profile picture for the last year or so. Conflict of interest wouldn’t matter as he is a private citizen using his platform, just like anyone else, to make his endorsements. I checked with Theodore Nollert about his endorsement by Armando, and he confirmed it was not paid for and more of a pleasant surprise than anything else. Jess Anderson’s team said the same thing. We also figured that to be the case since Armando’s tweet didn’t say it was paid for (like athletes must do for NIL-related social media posts).
I hope that answers your questions.
