A pedestrian walking on a railroad trestle over Dimmock’s Mill Road in Hillsborough died after being struck by a passing train on Tuesday afternoon, according to Orange County authorities.
A release from the sheriff’s office shortly after 3:30 p.m. said its deputies responded to the trestle shortly before 1 p.m. after receiving a call from Norfolk Southern Railway about the incident. Investigators described the deceased as a white female in their thirties, whose name is being withheld until their next of kin is notified.

Dimmock’s Mill Road is a long road, extending from west of downtown Hillsborough south until it merges with Orange Grove Road. Where the incident happened, however, is about as far east as the road begins, as the train trestle runs over it near the intersection with Eno Street.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the train, which it clarified was the Amtrak Piedmont 72, was traveling eastbound at the time of collision. The train had left Charlotte at 10:25 a.m. on Tuesday.
No further information is available at this time, according to the investigating authorities.
This is a developing story.
