The Carrboro Board of Aldermen recently heard updates on the development planned for the Lloyd Farm property and approved a conditional use permit for the initial phase of construction.

The developers are preparing to begin work on Phase 1 of transforming the 35-acre plot into the Shops at Lloyds Farm, located off Fayettville Road and Highway 54.

Carrboro mayor Lydia Lavelle spoke with WCHL’s Aaron Keck about what was discussed about the Lloyd Farm development following the board’s meeting on October 15.

“What happened Tuesday night,” she said, “was we got a lot of testimony, information, witnesses, and questions answered. We asked the developer and his [team] a lot of questions. The public hearing will be continued [this] Tuesday at which time we’ll get some answers to several questions we asked.”

The project, which had its original design rejected by the Board of Aldermen, was initially proposed in 2011. The board rezoned the area to create guidelines for the developers last year.

“The development proposed through the rezoning process last year was an anchor Harris Teeter grocery story with several outbuildings of some sort of commercial nature,” Lavelle said. “There’s going to be a [gas station] that will have electric charging stations and bicycle fix-it stations.”

The later phases of the development forecast the addition of residential units, office space, and an amphitheater. Construction on Phase 1, however, would not be until 2020 at the earliest.

The board approved the conditional use permit for the Shops at Lloyd Farm at their October 22 meeting.
