A new hotel in downtown Chapel Hill is officially open.

AC Hotels by Marriott announced the official opening on Monday of its new location at 214 West Rosemary Street.

The hotel is described as “a European-inspired, frictionless, elegant hotel.” It’s construction drew attention as the rooms were built beforehand and stacked together using a crane, which is a popular building method in Europe.

The AC Hotel in Chapel Hill was the first Marriott-branded hotel on the east coast to be constructed via this “modular construction” method.

The property was developed and is being operated by Spartanburg, South Carolina-based Johnson Management company OTO Development.

“Everything about this property – from walkability to local art to well-designed urban style, even the hyper-local signature cocktail – emphasizes ‘A New Way to Hotel,’” OTO Development president and CEO Corry Oakes said in a release.

The four-story hotel consists of 123 rooms.

“So there’s nothing unnecessary in the rooms, but what is there is better,” general manager Andrew Strickland said in the opening announcement. “There’s extra focus on functionality, details like adjustable reading lamps, USB charging ports, free WiFi, individual climate controls and, of course, the best bed you’ll sleep in besides your own.”

Several of the pieces of artwork throughout the hotel were completed by North Carolina-based artists.
