The Carrboro Police Department is investigating a drive-by shooting that took place on a downtown street Monday night.
A release from the department on Tuesday said police officers were alerted of shots fired around 9:45 p.m. on West Main Street. Reports indicate a vehicle entered the parking lot of the Wendy’s on the corner of the street and at least one suspect fired upon another vehicle attempting to leave the parking lot. Carrboro police said between 20 and 25 shots were fired in the incident, which occurred with customers in the restaurant.
The suspect vehicle then fled the scene of the crime and is still at large, according to Tuesday’s release.
Another vehicle at the drive-thru portion of the restaurant attempted to drive away from the scene when the shooting began, said the police department. The car then struck a light pole on South Greensboro Street and overturned near the Wendy’s building.
Investigations showed bullet impacts on the restaurant building, its drive-thru and dumpster, as well as some of the vehicles parked outside, Carrboro Police Chief Chris Atack told ABC 11 on Monday.
The victim struck by gunfire initially fled the scene, according to Tuesday’s release, but was found and taken to UNC Hospitals with non life-threatening injuries Monday night. Police say another person and a juvenile were injured in the car crash, but were treated for minor injuries and were released from the scene.
The Carrboro Police Department said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing greater threat to the public. The department said no suspect information is available at this time and officers are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or has knowledge of the shooting to get in touch with the department. Investigator Trey Kennedy with the Carrboro Police Department is leading the case and can be called at 919-918-7412. Those who wish to place anonymous tips on the incident can also call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 919-942-7515.
