The UNC Police Department is investigating more than a dozen vehicle break-ins reported since Tuesday, with the locations spanning across several campus parking lots and off-campus buildings.
An Alert Carolina was sent to the campus community at 1:09 p.m. on Wednesday to share details about the break-ins and warn of any similar threats. University police said it has received 15 reports of break-ins since Tuesday. The locations are as follows:
- The Williamson Lot on Skipper Bowles Drive
- S-11 Lot (Skipper Bowles Lot) on Skipper Bowles Drive
- Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) on Mason Farm Road
- The Rizzo Center off Meadowmont Lane
- Ronald McDonald and SECU House on Old Mason Farm Road
- Craige Parking Deck on Manning Drive
Police did not say whether there were similarities between the break-ins, but shared a series of tips to encourage safety and deter any potential thieves. UNC said to always lock vehicles and keep their windows rolled up when you’re away, not to leave any valuables visible from outside the vehicle, take valuable items with you as you exit, and make sure to set and activate an alarm system if a car has one. Additionally, campus police suggested people try to park in places where foot or vehicle traffic can see your vehicle as they pass by and to report any suspicious individuals or activity to authorities like UNC Police.
UNC Police can be called through using 911, and can be reached for non-emergencies by calling their 24-hour line at 919-962-8100. People with reports or safety concerns can also visit the Public Safety Building located at 285 Manning Drive for in-person assistance.
