The UNC Police Department is investigating a report of gunshots between passengers of two different, moving vehicles on the university’s campus.
An Alert Carolina message sent out to the UNC community Sunday night said the department was alerted of gunshots on South Road as two vehicles traveled the street just before 7 p.m.
According to the report, one vehicle was a silver sedan and the other was a red Nissan Altima. A passenger in the silver vehicle shot at the Nissan, which had just turned onto Raleigh Street heading in the direction of Franklin Street. The silver sedan was last seen driving toward South Columbia Street.
UNC Police said there are no reports of injuries as a result of the shooting at this time, but one bystander’s car was hit during the exchange of gunfire. The Alert Carolina message said several bullet casings were on the ground of the scene, which has now been cleared.
According to the report, UNC Police believes there is not a continuing threat to campus since the vehicles left the area. The UNC community is encouraged to report any suspicious activity seen, or if any further information regarding the investigation can be shared, by calling 911.
