The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office alerted the community a pair of recent identity theft investigations in Pittsboro — both of which involved Georgia residents.

The first release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday said its investigators have taken out felony charges on 52-year-old Troy Sanders Passmore, alleging that Statham, Ga. resident stole money from a victim’s checking account. Chatham County Sheriff’s investigators received a report on Dec. 5 about fraudulent withdrawals and the investigation led to identifying Passmore as the person who took the victim’s personal identification info and removed funds without their approval or knowledge.

The investigation then revealed Passmore used the victim’s name to cash two fraudulent checks at a different bank, according to Tuesday’s alert.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said as of Tuesday afternoon, Passmore has not yet been served on the three felony counts of identity theft and one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses. Once served, the local magistrate will create a bond and initial court dates for the Georgia resident.

A later release from the law enforcement agency detailed a series of elder abuse charges against 35-year-old Jacorey Reneze Howard.

Howard — who is listed as an Atlanta, Ga. resident — is a suspect in an investigation from March when the sheriff’s office began looking into the fraudulent use of a victim’s credit cards to make unauthorized purchases online. Chatham County investigators said Howard was employed as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and alleges he took advantage of his daily care role to access the victim’s financial accounts, make transactions to benefit himself, and take two cell phones for personal use.

Howard faces eight felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense and eight felony counts of exploitation of an elder, alongside four counts of felony larceny, five counts of felony computer fraud, one count of felony identity theft and one count of misdemeanor larceny.

Similar to Passmore’s case, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said Howard’s charges have not yet been served.

Editor’s Note: A previous release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office credited a Pittsboro-area address to Troy Passmore. A later release included a correction, saying he had a Georgia address.
