The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred in Efland on Thursday.

A release from the sheriff’s office said deputies received a call about a gunshot on Alice Miller Road shortly before 5 p.m. Upon arrival, they found 29-year old Maurio Cates with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The sheriff’s office said Cates later died after being transported to Duke Hospital.

Officials interviewed a person of interest Thursday evening. Per a press release on Friday, Cates and the person who shot him were known to each other and there is currently no risk to the community.

The sheriff’s office said anyone who may have information is encouraged to contact investigator Trent Hall with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office at (919) 245-2900.
