The man who was extricated from a vehicle in Orange County on Monday has now been taken into custody on a warrant alleging he assaulted his wife with a hammer.
Hillsborough Police officers and deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of NC 86 South between Sheetz and the Hampton Pointe Shopping Center just before 11 a.m. Monday. A 911 caller reported a man bleeding in a vehicle in the roadway median, according to the sheriff’s office, with the individual saying they had been stabbed.
Authorities arrived at the scene to find Charles Javon Eubanks “bleeding profusely,” according to an update released on Tuesday.
“He refused to exit his vehicle and claimed he had a gun. He slipped a suicide note out a partially open vehicle window,” a release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.
Law enforcement officials broke a window in Eubanks’ vehicle and removed him from the car. Eubanks was then transported to Duke University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Meanwhile, a Gaston County magistrate has issued a warrant on Sunday for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and Eubanks was taken into custody Monday night after he was released from the hospital.
“I am pleased this incident resolved without further injury to Mr. Eubanks, and without injury to any law enforcement officers or to people in the area. This was a frightening situation,” Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said in a release. “We were concerned about Mr. Eubanks given how heavily he was bleeding, and anytime a person refuses to exit a vehicle and reports access to a firearm, the potential danger to officers is very high. Hillsborough Police officers and troopers from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol assisted us with this very dynamic situation, and together we were able to make a plan, execute it to perfection, and restore normal traffic flow to the area. That takes courage, skill, and teamwork, and I am proud of these brave men and women.”
Eubanks was placed into the Orange County jail under a domestic violence hold and officials said he will be transported to Gaston County for his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon.
