Approximately two kilograms of Fentanyl was seized earlier this year in Hillsborough as part of an enforcement operation by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office with other local, state and federal law enforcement.

Authorities say the seizure occurred on May 16, but that details are limited because the investigation is ongoing.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate that “has been the cause of many accidental and incidental opiate overdoses across the United States,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The synthetic drug is often added to heroin.

Officials say the presence of Fentanyl in our community warranted notification of the public. Authorities say, “If you encounter a substance you believe contains Fentanyl, please do not handle” and “notify law enforcement.”
