The Chapel Hill Police Department named a Durham teen as a suspect in an armed carjacking which took place at The Siena Hotel early Saturday morning, while asking the public for help in identifying another sought in connection to an earlier armed robbery.
A release Tuesday night from the department said investigators are charging Shaun Derek Dunn, 16, with the following crimes:
- Robbery with a dangerous weapon
- Two counts of possession of stolen goods/property
- Felony larceny
- Felony conspiracy
- Second degree kidnapping

As of publication Tuesday night, Dunn remains at large.
“We believe Shaun Dunn is armed and dangerous,” said Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew. “If you see him, call 911 and do not approach him.”
Though police would not say if Dunn is also a suspect in an armed robbery which took place late Thursday night in the area of Old Chapel Hill Road, investigators have reportedly linked a stolen vehicle involved in the carjacking to the robbery. Law enforcement did, however, share photos a person of interest in the case on Wednesday — publishing pictures from a Durham gas station convenience store’s security footage and asking the public to help name them. The picture shows a young Black man walking away from the counter, wearing a black t-shirt, navy shorts with long white drawstrings, black socks and black sneakers.
Another photo shared on Wednesday, of a young Black man in a grey tank top, led to Chapel Hill Police later clarify the person was no longer involved in the department’s investigation.

The photo shared of a person of interest in the July 17 armed robbery of a woman at an ATM in Chapel Hill. Police said this footage was taken from a Durham gas station shortly after the robbery. (Photo via the Chapel Hill Police Department.)
“Our investigators are working to identify other suspects in both cases, and I remain confident that we will continue to make progress,” Lehew said on Tuesday night.
Anyone with information on the cases or Dunn’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or to contact the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can contact the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers at 919-942-7515 or visit their website. Information which leads to an arrest could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story, published on July 22, shared only Shaun Dunn’s identification as a suspect in the case.
