The Meadowmont community experienced a series of car break-ins over the weekend. A Facebook post from a community page said the Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating.

A series of police reports filed on Sunday, March 1, indicate at least three vehicles were broken into around Dogwood Acres Dive and Aquatic Drive in the Meadowmont neighborhood. All the vehicles were said to be unlocked.

Some of the items listed as stolen in the reports are purses, a cell phone, an epipen, drivers licenses and more.

A spokesperson for the department said Chapel Hill Police later responded to a request for information from the neighborhood association about the break-ins and shared information about the incidents. A photo shared to the Facebook page Meadowmont Neighbor provided information given to the association, but was not an official release from the department.

According to the image, the unlocked vehicles were broken into early Saturday morning and one car was stolen before being recovered in Durham. The police reports indicate all the reported break-ins occurred on Sunday.

The image also said the case had been assigned to an investigator.

The department spokesperson affirmed Chapel Hill Police is asking Meadowmont residents to use caution by locking vehicles and not storing valuable items in them until the investigation is resolved. They also are reminding car owners to close garage doors and secure homes when necessary.

The Chapel Hill Police Department said a message to the community was being prepared before the Facebook post was shared. Following the discovery of the post, the department spokesperson said an additional statement may ultimately not be released.

The department said it will have increased patrols in the Meadowmont neighborhood as the investigation continues.
