Investigators with the Chapel Hill Police Department identified the two victims in a shooting they are calling an “apparent” murder-suicide on Tuesday.

An update from the department said the two people found deceased by officers on Monday afternoon have been publicly identified as 70-year-old Hanho Choi and 31-year-old Hyejin Choi. According to police, Hanho Choi is the father of Hyejin Choi, and the pair lived together at the residence at 2701 Homestead Road — which is part of the Chapel View Apartment Complex in Chapel Hill.

Tuesday’s update further confirmed police are treating the case as a murder-suicide, saying investigators believe Hanho Choi was responsible for the shooting.

An alert from the department on Monday said police officers responded to a report of a shooting at the address and found a man and woman with “apparent gunshot wounds.” A spokesperson for the Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed to Chapelboro at the time the case was being investigated as a murder-suicide. With that, police said they believe there is no wider threat to the community’s safety.

Since the investigation is open, police encourage anyone who may have information about the fatal shootings to call 911 or contact the Chapel Hill Police Department directly at 919-968-2760 during business hours. Those who wish to remain anonymous can also use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers hotline (919-942-7515) or website to submit tips to investigators.
