The Chapel Hill Police Department has charged a Moore County man in the death of 55-year-old Michael Jesse Griffin. Griffin, a Chapel Hill resident, died on September 13 after an assault.
Cody Ray Callahan, 19, of Carthage, is charged with voluntary manslaughter, simple assault and false imprisonment. According to police, Callahan assaulted Griffin at around 7:40 p.m. on Saturday, September 7. Officers say an investigation found Callahan injured Griffin, who was trying to stop Callahan from assaulting another man. Griffin was then transported to UNC Hospitals, where he died six days later.
Callahan is currently being held in the Moore County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond and is expected to appear in Orange County court at 9 a.m. on Monday, October 7.
