Two Durham men pleaded guilty in Orange County Superior Court last week in connection with a 2018 home invasion case.
Jason O’Neal Brown, 38, and Jodeci Mustaffa Gaddy, 27, plead guilty to multiple counts, including assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and more. The charges stemmed from an incident in October 2018 when the pair broke into a residence off Lucas Farm Road in north Chapel Hill.
According to a release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Brown and Gaddy attacked a sleeping woman whose screams then awoke her husband. When he tried to intervene in the attack, the intruders shot him in the hand. Investigators charged the pair five days after the break-in.
Brown and Gaddy are also charged with a home invasion case in Person County with similarities to the Orange County case. Orange County Sheriff’s Office said items stolen in that case included a financial card and the men were identified on security footage using the card at a bank near Northgate Mall. When interviewed by Orange County investigators, Brown and Gaddy confessed to the Lucas Farm Road home invasion. In a previous release, the pair also confessed to numerous car break-ins in both counties.
Brown will serve 360 – 480 months in prison and Gaddy will serve 240-336 months for the Orange County crimes. Both still await sentencing in the Person County cases.
Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood shared a statement with the office’s release on the plea hearing and sentencing.
“We all deserve to feel safe in our homes while we sleep, and this crime robbed the couple of that security,” said Blackwood. “I am pleased this case has resolved, and I hope the couple feels an additional sense of security now. Our office would also like to thank the Person County Sheriff’s Office. The successful collaboration between our agencies resolved many personal and property crimes committed by these men.”

Maybe the Chapel Hill police will feel sorry enough for them to give them some money from the social Justice fund to pay their legal fees.
The people whose home was invaded are probably bankrupt from medical bills but the police need to signal some virtue.
