An interpreter for the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill recently died after contracting COVID-19.

A report from WRAL said Dulce Garcia, 29, passed away on May 26 after battling the virus. The piece reported a UNC Hospitals spokesperson said the institution believes Garcia contracted COVID-19 from exposure in the community and not while on the job.

UNC Health released a statement regarding Garcia’s death.

UNC Medical Center is mourning the loss of a well-loved employee, medical interpreter Dulce Garcia. Dulce was truly a health-care hero, known for always having a smile and for her selfless commitment to others, especially patients and co-workers. Every death during this pandemic is a tragedy, and this one hits close to home for our UNC Medical Center family. Our thoughts are with her family as they grieve this terrible loss.

Two GoFundMe pages have since been set up for the Garcia family. One is to help cover funeral costs and the other is to raise money for her parents, since Garcia was their sole provider, according to WRAL. As of Monday, more than $36,400 has been raised.
