Hundreds of UNC Health workers gathered outside UNC Medical Centers on Tuesday morning for a march to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Wearing face masks, the hundreds of employees marched around the medical centers lot to raise awareness for health inequities in North Carolina and the United States amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“We join together to show our support and our commitment to fighting health inequities,” said UNC Hospitals president Janet Hadar before the march. “I think recent event that have taken place with COVID-19 has clearly illustrated the health disparities that exist in our country. UNC Health remains committed to do our part in fighting health inequities. We’re in this together for each other and we’re in this together for North Carolina.”
Tuesday’s march in Chapel Hill in support of the Black Lives Matter movemenet was one of many that have taken place in Orange County in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, protesters knelt for eight minutes and 46 seconds in Franklin Street — the length of time Minneapolis Police officers knelt on the neck of George Floyd. Floyd died as a result of mechanical asphyxia, or being choked. Similar protests occurred on UNC’s campus and in Hillsborough.
