Red Bowl Asian Bistro recently announced it will be permanently closing in December.
The restaurant featuring Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food revealed on its Facebook page its final day at its University Place location will be Sunday December 15. The post says current circumstances are preventing them from remaining open, but does not provide more specific information about the decision to close. It also thanked customers for their loyalty over the last nine years the restaurant has been open.
Red Bowl’s closing is the most recent example of a business shuttering its door in the University Place mall. In November, retail store Southern Season announced it would be closing in early 2020 after 44 years. The Southern Season owned-and-operated restaurant Weathervane closed in early November.
A new business, however, will soon open two doors down from Red Bowl’s current location. Hawkers, which is a restaurant based around traditional Asian recipes like dumplings and wonton, is slated to open in 2020.
University Place potentially faces dramatic changes under the direction of new ownership, which purchased the mall in late 2018. Concept plans brought before the Chapel Hill Town Council show large-scale redevelopment to the approximately 39-acre property.
