A new coffee café on Franklin Street is set to open in the next few weeks, right beside a business many Chapel Hillians have known for years.

1922 by Carolina Coffee Shop will be a coffee café with grab-and-go options, according to the business’ ownership. The name refers to the first year Carolina Coffee Shop opened in the town.

“It is meant to be a place where people can comfortably hang out with friends, grab something quick during their lunch break, or do some work without feeling rushed,” Jeff Hortman, a co-owner of Carolina Coffee Shop, said in a statement to Chapelboro.

In addition to coffee, 1922 will have grab-and-go food options like pastries, salads and sandwiches. Carolina Coffee Shop will continue to operate as a sit-down restaurant.

If patrons are looking for more of a dine-in experience with table service, they can go next door to [Carolina Coffee Shop],” Hortman said.

1922 will operate from 140 East Franklin Street, which has been vacant since the Blue Spoon Microcreamery closed in September 2020 due to challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic. Before then, the space also housed another café-like business: the bakery and gelato shop Sugarland which closed in 2018.

According to Hortman, the business aims to have a soft opening in the next few weeks. A full opening is planned for the beginning of 2022, coinciding with Carolina Coffee Shop’s centennial year.
